Dorothy J. Barrett, 81, of Rock Island, passed away Wednesday February 25, 2015 at UPH-Trinity, Rock Island, surrounded by her children.
Funeral services will be 10am Tuesday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00-7:00pm at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery. Memorials may be left to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
Dorothy was born on October 7, 1933 in Kingsport, TN, the daughter of James Blaine and Carrie (Dykes) Mowell. She married Ralph L. Barrett in 1952 in Gate City, VA. He preceded her in death on February 21, 1996.
Mrs. Barrett was employed as a supervisor at Miller Container, Milan for 22 years, retiring in 1990. Prior to moving to the Quad Cities, Dorothy had been employed as a elementary educator with Hawkins County School Board at Mountain View Elementary School.
Mrs. Barrett attended Heritage Church, Rock Island. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and traveling to Tennessee to visit family. Dorothy enjoyed playing poker, spending time at the beach, was a avid sports enthusiast and watched basketball, football and Nascar.
Survivors include her sons, Jeff Barrett, Indianapolis, IN, Jamey (Kim) Barrett, Moline; daughter, Jerri Bird (Tim Goodnight), Rock Island; grandchildren, Joshua (Lisa) Bird, Jeremiah Barrett, Jesse Barrett; great grandson, Noah; siblings, Betty Conkin, Jimmie Mowell, Roy "Doc" Mowell; extended family, Jake and Stephanie, Cassie and Ashley, Zach, Anna, Jayden, Brooklynn; and her beloved dog, Maggie.
She was preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter, Gerry Lee; sisters, Wanda and Lila; and mother in law, Cora.
