Dorothy Nelson

Martha "Dorothy" Nelson, 94, of Rock Island, passed away Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at Unity Point Health-Trinity, Rock Island.

Services will be held at 11:00am, Wednesday, December 27, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island.

Visitation will be from Wednesday from 9:00-11:00am at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island.

Memorials can be left in her memory to Spring Forward Learning Center.

Dorothy was born on June 1, 1923, in St. Charles, IL, the daughter of Rene Desramoudt and Florence Verghote.

She married Russell E. Nelson on June 21, 1943 in Des Moines, Iowa. He preceded her in death on January 22, 1982.

Mrs. Nelson was employed by Rock Island School District for over 37 years as a teacher at Hawthorne and Irving Elementary Schools.

She was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church, Rock Island, Alpha Delta Kappa Honor Sorority and was an active volunteer with the Moline Township Activity Center, the American Red Cross and RSVP, Rock Island. An avid traveler, Dorothy visited six continents.

Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Marion Nelson, Geneseo; grandchildren, Caryn Sweeney, Washington D.C.; Christina Nelson, Council Bluffs, IA; Scott (Katie) Sweeney, Aurora, IL; Katherine Sweeney, Lisle, IL; and great granddaughters, Sloane and Taylor.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her three children, Scott Nelson, Ronald Nelson, and  Rene Sweeney; great grandson, James, and sister Margrette Kammes.
