IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Douglas "Doug"
Akin
January 31, 1957 – January 24, 2026
Douglas “Doug” Akin, 68, of Taylor Ridge, Illinois, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 24, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was born January 31, 1957, in Moline, Illinois, to Robert “Bob” and Jeanette (Gerber) Akin. On January 10, 1981 - the best day of his life - he married Cheryl Fobert. She was the love of his life, and together they spent 45 years building a family and a life they were proud of.
Doug was stubborn, protective, and deeply loyal - the kind of person who showed his love by being there. He didn’t need many words to make his point, but you always knew where you stood with him. His family knew they could count on him, no matter what, and his guidance shaped their lives in ways that will never fade.
Doug was a devoted husband and father who took great pride in raising his children. Some of their early years were spent in Colorado, where Doug embraced the outdoors he loved so much - hiking, fishing, and exploring the mountains. During those years and beyond, he coached Brooke and Kari’s travel softball teams, giving countless hours to practices, games, and long weekends on the road. He could also always be found in the stands cheering for Robbie at baseball games and swim meets. He cherished trips to the Boundary Waters, where fishing, quiet mornings, and time together became memories.
He loved being outdoors, whether he was fishing, working in the yard or garden, or simply enjoying the quiet. Doug was an excellent cook and believed strongly in the importance of taking time to rest — rarely missing the opportunity to take a nap. He loved great music, stood firmly by his beliefs, and passed down the values he lived by: hard work, loyalty, standing up for what matters, and just a little bit of stubbornness.
Doug loved working with his hands. He was a skilled painter and enjoyed restoring furniture, old homes, antique pedal cars, and runner sleds. He retired from the City of Moline after 28 years of dedicated service, and in all seasons, he poured his time into projects he loved. He especially loved taking his kids and grandkids sledding, building bonfires, and spending long hours in the garage – a place many will remember as Doug’s unofficial gathering spot.
Doug is survived by his wife, Cheryl; his children, Brooke (Derrick) Hendrickx, Robbie Akin, and Kari (Tyler) Anderson; and his grandchildren, Zach and Josh Hendrickx, and Kai and Eli Anderson. He is also survived by his mother, Jeanette Akin; his sister, Diane (John) Kinser; many in-laws, nieces, and nephews; and his loyal dogs, Ayla and Loki, and his cat, Gizmo, who were never far from his side.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert “Bob” Akin; his nephews, Cory Creger and Stephen Kinser; his parents-in-law, Francis “Bud” Fobert and Joan Fobert Guise; and his brothers-in-law, Gary Fobert and Jim Fobert, and beloved pets who shared his life.
Doug was many things to many people - stubborn, caring, knowledgeable, and deeply loving. His family will miss him every day and carry his lessons with them always.
Cremation rites have been accorded. No services will be held at this time. A celebration of Doug’s life will be announced at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in care of the family.
