Jerry graduated from Davenport High School in 1958 and attended Augustana College for his undergraduate degree. He then attended medical school at the University of Iowa. On June 20, 1965 he married Georgeann Younggren in River Falls, WI. After medical school his internship and residency took him and Georgeann to the Gunderson Clinic in LaCrosse, WI and to the University of Michigan.

Jerry was a U.S. Army Veteran. During his time in the military he, Georgeann and their children were stationed in Kitzingen, Germany, where he treated soldiers returning from Vietnam. After his military service, he returned to Clinton, IA where he established a private practice at Bluff Medical Center. He practiced internal medicine there for eighteen years. After retiring from private practice he assisted in the establishment of the first V.A. outpatient clinic in Bettendorf, IA. After years of service with the V.A., he opted to retire to spend more time with his family.

Jerry was known as Apa and Grandpa to his grandchildren, with whom he enjoyed watching their games, concerts, recitals, plays, riding bikes, visiting playgrounds and spending time outdoors. Jerry was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport, IA. He volunteered many hours filling bags at the local food pantry, helping children one day a week at Camp Shalom, and taking part in medical mission trips. Jerry had a love of clocks, many collected during his time in Germany, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. He never missed an opportunity to enjoy pecan pie or Whitey’s ice cream.
