Obituary

Edna M. Johnson-York, 89, of Rock Island, passed away Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at UPH-Trinity, Rock Island.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 1, 2018 at Greater Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, 929 14th St., Rock Island.  Visitation will be one hour prior to service.  Burial will be at National Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the family.

Edna was born on December 26, 1928 in Temple, LA, the daughter of Ed and Amelia (James) Morris.  She married Walter Johnson and later married Jessie York. Edna worked as a preschool teacher before retirement, and was known for her creativity in decorating and activities with her students.  She was a member at Greater Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, and sang in their choir until she was eighty.  Edna enjoyed going to yard sales, and serving on multiple boards for the City of Rock Island.  She has been in many newspaper articles with Dick Durbin speaking on behalf of senior citizens.  Edna was a big fan of President Barrack Obama.

Edna is survived by her children, Renae (Steve) Belknap, WI, Lenore (Charles) Benton-Bey, IA,  Carla Pittman, TN, Lamonte Johnson, WI, and Areanna Shears, IL; 11 grandchildren Jamal, Tierra, Amelia Belknap, Stephanie (Steele), Charles, Steven Benton and Lenore L. Benton-Bey, Latoya Griffin and Camia Pittman, Diego and Tariq Shears; 23 great grandchildren; acquired daughter and son Lillian Davis and Glen Evans Sr., God child Chris Jenkins and faithful friend Wallace Henning. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Walter Johnson and Jessie York and her parents.
