Obituary

Elizabeth (Betty) Wegscheid of Moline passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026, at Overlook Village, Moline, while being kept company by her family.

Visitation will be Sunday, March 22, 2026, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m at Wheelan-Presley Funeral Home in Milan, with a rosary at 12:30. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 23, 2026, 10:30 a.m. at the St. Ambrose Campus of St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish in Milan. The service will be livestreamed and can be viewed by following this link - https://vimeo.com/1174065606/b3259ce4dc. Memorials may be made to St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish.

Betty was born at home in Richmond, Minnesota on April 21, 1938, the daughter of Herbert and Irma Klein. She attended St. Benedict's College in St. Joseph, Minnesota and graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island in 1980.

She and Ed Wegscheid were married on September 13, 1958. Their marriage was blessed by six children.

Betty, with her husband, Ed, were 4-H leaders for many years, as well as high school robotics mentors. She was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Milan, a member of Blue Cross Mission, and served as a Eucharistic Minister and a lector at the church. She also enjoyed at least 15 years as an active member of Better Read Than Dead, a ladies’ book discussion group.

Betty’s greatest joy was giving to others. She regularly read daily newspapers for the sight-impaired on WVIK public radio and loved her time as a volunteer tutor for students of English as a Second Language at Black Hawk College. She was an active volunteer for Emergency Pregnancy Services for 25 years, and coordinated blood drives for her parish. As an accomplished seamstress, she sewed for family and friends. She knitted hats and blankets for preemies. She never said no when asked to share her considerable talents with others.

Betty loved to travel, and visited each of the seven continents at least once, traveling with Ed or her children.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Robert, and her sisters Lelia and Jane. Survivors include her husband Ed; sister Judy Rewerts of Minneapolis, MN; children Douglas (Tearesa) of Stevensville, MI; Michele of Minneapolis, MN; Laura (Michael Grills) of Denver, CO; Gina (Brad) Tegge of Waukesha, WI; Maria (Todd) Levetzow of Bettendorf, IA; and Christopher of Minneapolis, MN.

Also surviving are grandchildren James and David (Kim) Wegscheid; Simone, Nolan, and Aidan Tegge; Eddie and Jessie Levetzow; and great-granddaughter Violet Wegscheid.

The family thanks all the staff at Overlook Village for their kindness and care during her life at Overlook, with special appreciation for the staff and nurses in the Memory Care unit. They are also very grateful for the great care she received from Unity Point Hospice.
