Elizabeth J. "Betty" Fitzgibbon, 90, a resident of Silver Cross Nursing Center, Rock Island, died Friday, April 1, 2016 at the center.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 4:30 pm Wednesday at Christ the King Chapel of St. Ambrose University, Davenport. The family will greet friends from 3:00 pm until service time Wednesday at the Chapel. Private inurnment will be at the Calvary Mausoleum, Rock Island. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island is assisting the family. Memorials may be made to the Campus Ministry Department at St. Ambrose University.
Elizabeth Jane Burke was born July 16, 1925 in St. Louis, a daughter of Joseph and Nellie Whalen Burke. She married John F. Fitzgibbon on Sept. 1, 1951 in St. Louis. He died Nov. 30, 1992.
Betty graduated from high school in St. Louis and worked at the St. Louis Globe Democrat. She was a life-long learner attending classes at St. Ambrose and especially enjoyed those offered by the Theology Department.
She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island, and its Altar and Rosary Society. Betty was also a member of the Third Order of St. Francis and Church Women United. She frequently attended Bible studies and volunteered at Jordan Catholic School, Rock Island. She enjoyed reading, traveling and especially being with her family, whom she loved. Betty never missed an opportunity to vote except for this last primary election.
Survivors include her children, Elizabeth Baren, Davenport, John (Judy) Fitzgibbon Jr., Le Claire, Margaret Osborn, Silvis, Mara (Donald) Adams, Rock Island, and Tim (Julie) Fitzgibbon, Evansville, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; her brother, Brother James Burke C.Ss.R., Liguori, Mo.; and a niece, Sister Mary Ellen McDonagh B.V.M., Dubuque, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister and brother-in-law, Rita and Jack McDonagh; son-in-law, David Osborn; and nephew, John McDonagh.
