Elizabeth Ann Hass was born October 2, 1967 in Moline, the daughter of A. John and Sandra J. Perkins Hass. She married Brant A. Carius on May 4, 1991 in Rock Island.
Elizabeth graduated from Rock Island High School in 1985, where she had been a member of the swim and golf teams, and served on the homecoming court. In 1985, Elizabeth also served as an attendant at the Rock Island Junior Board's Mardi Gras Ball. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Iowa in 1989 and a Master of Arts from Webster University, St. Louis in 1993.

Elizabeth was a selfless and self-effacing person, who throughout her life put the needs of others before her own. In 2002, she left the corporate world to home school her children. It would be Elizabeth's passion and her success as an educator and role model will be remembered through and by her three children.
