Elizabeth L. "Lizzie" Meegan, 86, of Moline, died Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at UnityPoint Health - Trinity Rock Island.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Memorials may be made to Alleman High School or Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island.
Lizzie was born on Jan. 10, 1931 in Davenport, the daughter of Daniel J. and Louise Van Hecke McCarthy.
She was a graduate of St. Joseph's High School, Rock Island and Marycrest College, Davenport, where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English. While at Marycrest, Lizzie was elected by the faculty for membership in Kappa Gamma Pi, a National Catholic College Graduate Honor Society, which honors students who excel in leadership, scholarship, faith, and service.
Lizzie was employed at the Moline Dispatch and Rock Island Argus for over 50 years in various positions, including Women's News Editor and Food Editor. For many years she wrote the popular column "The Curious Cook." Throughout her career at the Dispatch, she received numerous awards for her work.
On Sept. 2, 1961, she married William T. Meegan at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island, where she was a long time parishioner. Bill was the love of her life. They not only shared many wonderful memories with family and friends but also worked together at the Dispatch.
Along with being a member of Kappa Gamma Pi, Lizzie was a former member of the American Association of University Women. She was also active in the Carolyn Getz Circle of Kings Daughters.
Lizzie loved to entertain her family and friends with elegant dinner parties. She was very proud of her Irish heritage and loved to celebrate St. Patrick's Day with the "McCarthy Clan" and friends. She will be missed by all. Lizzie is survived by her loving McCarthy cousins and Bill's many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
