Obituary

Esther H. "Peggy" Morrissey, 93, Glen Carbon, IL formerly of Rock Island, IL passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at Eden Village Senior Living Center. There will be a visitation from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM Tuesday April 22, 2025 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island, followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church or St. Jude Children's Hospital.

Peggy was born on July 20, 1931, in Little Chute, WI to Frederick and Helen (Van Dyke) LeRoy. She grew up in Rock Island, graduating from St. Joseph's Catholic High School's class of 1949, the last graduating class from St. Joseph's High School. On July 24, 1951, she was united in marriage to James V. Morrissey. The couple made their home in Rock Island, where they raised their six children. Peggy was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker.

Peggy had a full life and was always learning. She was active and involved at St. Joseph's Catholic Church and School, especially while her children were in attendance. One of her many efforts in support of the school and staff was her involvement in collecting trading stamps to purchase an automobile for the nuns. She learned to swim as an adult to keep her children safe on weekly picnics to Lake Harrah. She was active in the arts, working backstage in theater to secure the best costumes and props for the actors. She learned hat-making, ceramics and guitar. She also enjoyed painting. Her mediums included oil and watercolor. She was an avid reader and a renowned cook and baker, roasting many a ham and turkey for countless family gatherings. Her red velvet cake was incomparable. She adored children, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and never tired of her time spent with them.

Peggy is survived by her children, Terece "Terri" (Andrew Hickson) Morrissey of Cave Creek, AZ; Julie (Buzz) Sweeney of Palm Springs, CA; Martin (Kit) Morrissey of Edwardsville, IL; and daughter-in-law Angela (Michael) Morrissey, Port Charlotte, FL; grandchildren, Miguel Morrissey, Manuel Morrissey, Joshua Ivanoff, Amanda Ivanoff, Jayson Ivanoff, Catrina (nee Ivanoff) Parks, Margaret Morrissey, Matthew Morrissey, and Nathaniel Morrissey; great-grandchildren, Jacob Ivanoff, Jaycie Ivanoff, Daisy Ivanoff, Charlee Parks, Lucas Morrissey, and John Morrissey; nephew and niece Tom Curtis and Sally (Mark) Burgmeier; and many other extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; children Michael, Cynthia, and Matthew Morrissey; grandson Michael Sweeney; and siblings Joanne Blaser, Doloris Curtis, and Frederick LeRoy, Jr.
