Obituary

Everett A. Manning, 85, of Rock Island, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 18, 2019 at UPH-Trinity Rock Island surrounded by his loving family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 am on Monday, February 25, 2019 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island, followed by burial at National Cemetery, Rock Island, with military rites conducted by the Moline American Legion Post #246.  Visitation will be held from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm on Sunday, February 24, 2019 at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island, with the recitation of the rosary at 12:30 pm., followed by the Father Edward J. Bader Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Service.  Memorials may be made to the Quad City Right to Life facilities or St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island.

Everett was born to Floyd and Elizabeth (Wilburn) Manning on July 28, 1933 in Andover, IL.  He married Norma DeCommer on September, 29, 1956 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rock Island.  He proudly served in the U.S. Army, actively until 1955 and continued in the reserves until 1961.  At age 49, Everett retired from Alcoa in 1983 after 30 years of employment.

Everett was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church where he served as a lector and eucharistic minister.  He was a member of the choir, both funeral and Sunday, for many years.  He also served on the Liturgical life committee and on the Parish Council.  For 30+ years he scheduled lectors for the 8 am daily mass and also trained new lectors for same period for Sunday mass.  For many years he took communion to the hospital each week.

He was a member of the Allouez Council 658 Knights of Columbus, Edward J. Bader Assembly of Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, R.I. Conservation Club, the Moline American Legion Post 246, the Fisherman's Club, and helped the sisters at St. Mary's Monastery.

He enjoyed fishing, golfing, camping, woodworking, corny jokes, and sporting events both participating and watching, especially when his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were playing.  Everett was inducted into the Orion High School Sports Hall of Fame, and served as president of his graduating class.

He is survived by his wife, Norma; children, Gregg (Marti) Manning, Pittsford, N.Y., Paula Maddox, Moline, Therese (Merle) Wiese, Davenport, Shawn (Karen) Manning, LeClaire, IA, Kelan (Lori) Manning, Dubuque, IA; 15 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Leona and Lorraine.  He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Cleo, Leo, Bernard, and Eugene; sister, Eileen Leaf; and granddaughter, Rachel Wiese.
