Fern Edith Schalk, 81, of Rock Island, died Sunday, April 6, 2014 at Amber Ridge Memory Care, Moline. Cremation rites were accorded. A memorial visitation will be Wednesday from 4-7 pm at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan. Burial will be private in Andalusia Cemetery. Memorials may be made in care of Beacon of Hope Hospice.

Fern was born in Milan on May 3, 1932, a daughter of Carl G. and Myrtle McAnally Frank. She married Robert F. Schalk Sr. on January 17, 1951 in Swedona, Ill.

Fern worked for 25 years as a statistician for Bituminous Insurance Company in Rock Island.

Fern enjoyed square dancing, flower gardening and bicycling. She was a member of the Merry Rounders Round Dance Club and the Do-Si-Do Dance Club, both of Bettendorf.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Schalk Sr., Rock Island; children (and spouses); Dianne M. (Dewat R. Chaudhry, M.D.) Schalk, Rock Island, Michael (Brenda) Schalk, Matherville, Ill. and Robert (Pam) Schalk Jr., East Moline; grandchildren, Benjamin (Dorothy) Schalk, Amanda Schalk, Meghan (Viminda) Shafer, Heather (Mike) Whittaker, Eric Schalk, Brian (Melissa) Keller and T.Leo (Stacey) Keller; ten great-grandchildren; and sister, Inez (George) Schaub, Bettendorf.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and four sisters.
