Flora D. Whiteside, 89, of Reynolds, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, April 14, 2016 at UnityPoint Health Trinity, Rock Island. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Wheelan – Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 801 W. Edgington St., Reynolds. An Order of the Eastern Star Service will be held at 7:00 p.m at the funeral home. Private graveside services will be held on Tuesday in Reynolds Cemetery. Memorials may be made in care of the Andalusia Fire Department or Order of the Eastern Star #617, Andalusia.
Flora was born on April 9, 1927 in Chicago, a daughter of David and Marguerite Seymour. She married Frederic J. Whiteside on March 18, 1948 in Chicago. He passed away in November of 1971. In early years, Flora was a homemaker who raised her kids and helped her husband on the family farm. She and Fred farmed in the Milan and Joslin areas and also owned and operated a Case dealership in Reynolds from '65 to '71. After Fred passed away, Flora returned to school, graduated from Augustana College and later earned her Master's Degree from Western Illinois University. She taught at Rockridge School District for several years and greatly enjoyed her career.
Flora loved spending time with her family and she enjoyed photography, sewing, quilt making, gardening and caring for her home. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #617 in Andalusia, #516 in Buffalo Prairie and Edgington Presbyterian Church.
Left to cherish her memory are her children; Marguerite Copeland, Tavenier, FL, Frederic (Cathie) Whiteside, Rock Island, Mary (Terry) Johnson, Milan, Russell Whiteside, Milan and Richard (Michelle) Whiteside, Muscatine, Iowa; grandchildren, Tisha Turner, Milan, Eric (Amy) Turner, Rock Island, Mike Whiteside, Rock Island, Michelle (Christian) Villadolid, Chicago, Jay (Missy LeVan) Whiteside, Rock Island, Margo (Ryan) Taylor, Rochester, MN, Casie Johnson, Davenport, Iowa and Wade Whiteside, Muscatine, Iowa; 14 great grandchildren; brother in law, Virgil Butler; nephew, Jeff Butler, niece, Beth Butler and her dog, Hunter.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother, Joseph Seymour; brother in law, Wesley Whiteside; sisters in law, Marilyn Butler and Rita Seymour and a son in law, Robert Copeland
