IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Frank J.
Skafidas
May 3, 1945 – March 28, 2023
Frank J. Skafidas, 77, of Bettendorf, passed away on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
Funeral services are 11 am on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Rock Island. The service will be live-streamed and can be accessed at https://bit.ly/3aTbZrI or https://www.facebook.com/StGeorgeQC/?ref=bookmarks. Visitation is 5-8 pm Friday, March 31, 2023, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island, where a Trisagion service will be conducted at 5 pm. Frank would like everyone in attendance to dress in their favorite color. Private family burial will occur Monday. Memorials may be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church or the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
Frank was born on May 3, 1945, in Rock Island, the eldest son Sam and Bessie (Stomos) Skafidas. A lifelong "Quad Citian," Frank graduated from United Township High School and the University of Northern Illinois, where he was known more for his sense of humor and outstanding poker playing skills than he was for his study habits. Following college, Frank served his country honorably in the US Army. In 1970, Frank married the love of his life, Mary Jane Murphy. This union produced Frank's beloved daughters, Kate Henry and Mimzi Griffin.
Frank was a lifelong entrepreneur, having owned automobile dealerships and rental agencies, and working well into his seventies as an automobile broker. An exceptional gardener, Frank will be remembered for his green thumb and beautiful landscapes. He was an avid NFL and college football fan, but his favorite sports teams were those that included his cherished grandchildren. Frank will be missed most for his sense of humor and love of people. If a man could be measured by the number of people who called him a friend, Frank would have been the richest man in the world. Never was this more evident than in his final days when friends and family traveled from near and far to spend time with him.
Frank is survived by his wife Mary Jane; daughters, Kate (Patrick) Henry, Atlanta, GA, Mimzi (TJ) Griffin, Davenport, IA; grandchildren, Mia Griffin, Olivia, Pearce, and Reeve Henry; sister, Alexis (Bob) Platoni, Orange, CA; nieces Kara and Leah Platoni, several extended family members, and his cherished dog, Tootsie.
Frank was predeceased by his parents, and his brother, Jim Skafidas.
The family would like to thank Dr. Bryant Mutchler and the staff at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House for their care and compassion.
