IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Fred N.
Penny
November 15, 1946 – August 29, 2022
Our dearly beloved brother, Rev. Fred Nicholas (Nick) Penny, of Moline, Illinois, passed from this life into eternal life on August 29, 2022, at his home in Moline, Illinois. He was 75 years old. Rev. Penny was born on November 15, 1946, in Alton, Illinois, as the first son and the fourth child of the Rev. Fred L. Penny and Lula M. Penny. As a preacher's kid, Rev. Penny grew up in Chester, Illinois, Sparta, Illinois, Muscatine, Iowa, and finally Iowa City Iowa, where he graduated from High School. After high school, Nick, as he was fondly called by his family, pursued his interest in music and joined a touring band as lead guitar player and vocalist in a soul and blues ensemble called "The New Establishment," which traveled around the Midwest. He later earned a B.A. degree in economics from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa and was ordained a minister in the AME Church very soon thereafter, serving as pastor to several AME congregations at churches in the North District of the Illinois Annual Conference. Rev. Penny's first pastoral assignment was to Bethel AME Church at Clinton, Iowa, and he later served as an assistant pastor at Gaines Memorial Chapel AME Church in East Moline, Illinois. Again, as need arose, he returned to Bethel AME Church in Clinton as its pastor. He also briefly filled a pastoral vacancy at St. John AME Church in Burlington, Iowa. After retirement from the ministry, Rev. Penny joined Bethel AME Church in Davenport, Iowa. With his adventuresome nature, his activities included flying an airplane as an amateur pilot, owning a racehorse, winning a public speaking award from Toastmasters, and developing skills as a mechanical engineer. He won the 30-Year Service Award as an operations technologist at the John Deere and Company World Headquarters in Moline, Illinois. Rev. Penny was also a great cook and a published author, whose works involve explaining and making the Discipline of the AME Church more understandable to its congregants. Those whom he pastored remember his kindness, patience, and generosity wherever a need presented itself. Rev. Penny was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving sisters and brothers: Sisters--Dianna Penny of Iowa City Iowa; R. Jane Penny-Parker of American Canyon; California, Barbara Penny-James of Oakland, California (Fred James); Brothers--John Penny of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Joseph Penny of Iowa City, Iowa (Tammy); plus several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and cousins.
