Frederick R. Houlton, 96, of Rock Island, died Friday, September 22, 2023 at UnityPoint Health-Trinity Hospital, Rock Island.  Cremation rites were accorded.  The memorial service will be 12pm Friday, September 29, 2023, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport, preceded by visitation from 10:30am until service time.  Inurnment following the service at Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors will be presented.  Memorials may be made in care of the Rock Island Rotary Club.

Fred was born in Macomb, Illinois, on January 17, 1927, son of Charles "Frank" and Harriet "Lucille" Allard Houlton.  He married Virginia Quaife on June 19, 1955, at the Annawan Community Church, Annawan, Illinois.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran who served both in WWII and the Korean War. He earned a Master's degree in education, and went on to teach in Yates City, Annawan, and Rock Island School Districts, then an elementary school principal, at Horace Mann, Eugene Field, and Longfellow schools.  After retirement, Fred taught English in Dalian, China, followed by years of volunteer community service.

Fred was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport, and a past member and elder of Broadway Presbyterian Church, Rock Island.  He was a member of the Rock Island Rotary Club, where he had over 50 years of perfect attendance; served as president, district governor, head of youth exchange and was awarded District Rotarian of the Year. He also served as president of the Rock Island Library Board.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Houlton, Rock Island; daughters, Pamela (Robert) Vizenor, Seattle, WA, and Kim (Kevin) Grace, Lake Mary, FL; granddaughters, Emma and Annie Vizenor, Nicole (Joe) Knox, and Alisa Grace; great-granddaughters, Cambria and Finley Knox. He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Cleo Houlton, Martha Larson, George Houlton, and Louis Anders.
