IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gary Lee
Ellis
December 8, 1944 – February 14, 2026
Gary Lee Ellis, age 81, passed away on February 14, 2026, in Davenport, Iowa.
Gary was born in Fort Des Moines, Iowa, to Rolland “Wayne” and Maxine R. (Haifley) Ellis. He married the love of his life, Karen Markley, on November 27, 1964, in Des Moines, Iowa. Together they shared 61 years of devotion, partnership, and faith.
A graduate of Moody Bible Institute, Gary dedicated his life to ministry. He served faithfully as both a pastor and a missionary, following a calling that took him far beyond his Iowa roots. His ministry led him to Africa, Brazil, South America, and Mexico, where he shared the gospel with humility, compassion, and a deep love for people. Gary and Karen embraced a life of service and adventure, living at 22 different addresses across 5 states and 2 countries during their marriage. Through every move and every ministry assignment, Gary remained steadfast in his faith and committed to the people he served.
Gary is survived by his loving wife, Karen; his children, Julie (Chris) Johnson, Daniel (Brijette) Ellis, and Joy (Mark) Van Dyke; and his grandchildren, Monica Johnson, Luke Johnson, Elijah Ellis, Sydney Ellis, Naomi Ellis, Grant Van Dyke, and Allison Getz; and his great‑grandchildren, Harrison Van Dyke, Charlotte Van Dyke, Kenneth Getz, and Mary Getz. He is also survived by his sister, Christine Christman, and her children.
