George E. Sowers, 92, of Rock Island, passed away Monday August 4, 2014 at home.

A memorial service will be 10:00am, Friday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island, with visitation one hour prior. Burial will be in the National Cemetery, Rock Island with Military Honors by Moline American Legion 246.

Memorials may be made to Unity Point Hospice, Honor Flight of the Quad Cities or American Cancer Society.

George was born on April 1, 1922 near Webster, IL, the son of Charles G and Effie May (Weeks) Sowers. He married Alma Kelly on September 3, 1942 in Denver, Il.

He was a United States Army Veteran having served during WWII as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne .

Mr. Sowers had been employed at John Deere Plow and Planter, Moline, for 39 years, retiring in 1984.

George was a member of South Park Presbyterian Church, Rock Island, Rock Island Fitness Club, Blackhawk hiking Club, Tuesday Biking Club and formerly a member of the American Legion, Bloomington, IL.

He loved biking, hiking, swimming, square dancing and camping.

Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Alma; daughter, Gracia Stebens, Rock Island; son, Tom Sowers, Visalia, CA.; 7 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren and sister, Clara Cambell, Carthage, IL.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Marion Sowers.
