Gertrude McCullough, 92, of Milan, died Monday, Jan. 11, 2016 at her home surrounded by family.
Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, Milan. Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home & Crematory, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan. Burial will be at Beulah Cemetery. Memorials may be made in care of New Kingdom Trailriders or to Unity Point Hospice.
Gertrude was born on July 1, 1923 in rural Mercer County, Illinois, the daughter of Carl and Grace (Tomlinson) Tornquist. She married Orville G. McCullough on March 30, 1947 in Milan. Orville preceded her in death on Aug. 28, 1997.
Gertrude and Orville owned McCullough's Department Store in Milan for 44 years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Milan, Order of Eastern Star, King's Daughters, Paso Fino Owners and Breeders Association and Quad Cities All Breed Horse Association. She was passionate about horses and trail riding. She had ridden trails in many states and Mexico.
She was one of the founders of MIP (Milan Improvement Project), and had been active in PTA and served as a Girl Scout Leader for many years. She and her husband enjoyed wintering in Florida and fishing.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Kay (Dick) Quigg, Milan and Gail (Bob) Poe, Milan; grandchildren, Kim (Adam) Evec, Spartanburg, SC, and Amy Brownback, Oakwood Hills, IL; great-grandchildren, Carter Evec, Aubrie Evec and Kailyn Brownback; sister-in-law, Marge Behn, Orion; and five nieces and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, father, mother, stepfather (Harry Behn) and brother, James G. "Jim" Behn.
