IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gladys
Atwater
September 16, 1945 – October 5, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gladys Atwater, a beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished member of our community, who left us peacefully at the age of 79.
Gladys was born on September 16, 1945, to Hollis and Irene McBride. In her younger years, she met Percy, who would become her beloved husband on November 9, 1962. Together, they dedicated themselves to building a life filled with love and hard work for their family. Gladys dedicated her life to her family, embodying a spirit of love and laughter that will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew her. As a proud mother of four, grandmother to six, and great-grandmother to three, she created a warm and nurturing home, always putting her family first.
Gladys was employed with Seaford Clothing in the 70's but soon transitioned to a vital role in her husband's bar and grill business. Known for her culinary prowess, she became a local legend in the kitchen, delighting countless patrons with her delicious cooking. Her meals brought people together, fostering laughter and love around the table, and she took immense joy in nurturing those she cared for.
Standing at just 4'11", she was a true force of nature. Her unwavering strength, both in spirit and character, inspired everyone around her. Even as her health declined, she remained steadfast in her faith and dedication to her loved ones, embodying resilience, and grace. Her love and devotion to Jesus Christ never faltered; she understood from a young age that her strength and comfort came from Him. This was evident in her words, action, and involvement at Tabernacle Baptist Church of Moline, Illinois before her difficult journey began.
Gladys is survived by her three children, Rebella "Ann" Perry (Tony), Chris and Marla Atwater. Her six grandchildren, Dominique, Jordan, Christine and Kairee Atwater, Jalen Perry, and Alexa Armstrong. Great grandchildren: Tristan, Akhari and Axeton. Siblings: Deloris Mayfield, Dorothy Byers (Charles), Mary Gardner, Michael Earl McBride and Ricky McBride (Pam) and a host of family and friends who will remember her for her kindness, humor, and incredible cooking.
Gladys was preceded in death by her daughter, Aretha Ann Atwater; parents, Hollis and Irene McBride; Siblings: Hollis McBride Jr, Preston McBride and Marilyn Mallet.
A celebration of her life will be held at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Moline, Illinois at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 12, 2024 (livestreamed through the church's Facebook page). Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. The burial will be in Hampton Township Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her husband who preceded her in death by one week, a testament to their marriage of over 61 years. We invite all who knew her to come share memories and honor the loving legacy she leaves behind.
Rest in peace, Little Babe. Your love will continue to nourish us all.
