Obituary

Harold E. Stark, 94, of Bettendorf, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016 at the Davenport Lutheran Home.

Funeral services are 11 am Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport. Burial with military honors will be at the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Visitation is 9:30 am until service time Thursday at the church. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island, is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or to Camp Shalom.

Harold Edwin Stark was born on Oct. 6, 1921 on the family farm near Stockton, Iowa, the son of Walter and Malinda Meinert Stark. He married Mary House on Sept. 11, 1949 at St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Harold was educated in a one room country school and graduated from Durant High School. He attended the College of Mortuary Science in St. Louis. He served as a funeral director at the Runge Mortuary for 47 years prior to his retirement.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II. Harold served for 39 months and was on a LST- landing craft during the D-Day invasion at Normandy. He then went to the Pacific Theater of operation and served aboard the US Navy Hospital Ship the USS Tranquility. He was a Petty Officer 1st Class at the time of his discharge.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport; a 50 year member of Trinity Masonic Lodge 208, Davenport Consistory, Kaaba Shrine and the American Legion and V.F.W. Harold enjoyed traveling; he had traveled to many places including Europe, but his favorite vacation spot was Door County, Wisconsin. He was a fan of the Green Bay Packers and Iowa Hawkeyes, especially Hawkeye wrestling.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; sister, Luella Wiese, Eldridge; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Carol and Norman Voelliger, Bettendorf; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bud and Dottie House, formerly of Eldridge, now of Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Robert Wiese.
