Harry Orr, Jr., 91, of Moline, passed away on Sunday, December 6, 2015 at his home. There will be no public services or visitation. Private inurnment with military honors will be held at a later date in Rock Island Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in care of the Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children, 2211 North Oak Park Ave., Chicago, IL 60707. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island is assisting the family.
Harry was born on June 24, 1924 in East Moline, the son of Harry Sr. and Vera Williams Orr. He graduated from United Township High School in 1942. Upon graduation, Harry enlisted in the U.S. Navy and earned 5 battle stars for his service in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He later graduated from the Bradley School of Horology. He married Beverly Stratton on September 8, 1946 in East Moline. She preceded him in death on January 1, 2004. Harry was the owner and operator of Harry Orr Jewelers for 45 years, retiring in December of 1999.
Harry was very involved in his community, serving in various public positions including: the Rock Island Police and Fire Commission, State of Illinois Law Enforcement Commission, Illinois State Police Merit Board, Rock Island Junior Chamber of Commerce, Senior Chamber of Commerce, Young Republicans and the Polio Foundation of Rock Island County. He was also a member of the Tebala Shrine (Rockford), Royal Order of Jesters, Court 129; Masonic Lodge Trio, Blue Lodge, Valley of Moline Consistory, Royal Arch and a Member of American Legion Post 227, East Moline. He received several awards for his involvement including; the Meritorious Service Medal from the Illinois State Police, Distinguished Service Award from the Rock Island Junior Chamber of Commerce, and recognition from the Boy Scouts of America for Meritorious Service.
Harry was very proud of his military service and dedicated to serving others through his vast involvement to make his community a better place to live.
Left to cherish his memory are his son, Jeffery (Jeanette) Orr, Taylor Ridge; grandchildren, Mitchell Orr and Nicholas Orr of Florida and Katelyn Orr, Taylor Ridge and 2 great grandchildren, Jillian and Spencer Orr of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Beverly; son, Steven; and grandson, Jeremiah.
