Obituary

Hazel Lee (Barber) Moore was born September 10, 1926 in Clarksville, MO., the first-born child of Gabriel and Mary Leora Barber.  At an early age, she moved with her parents and siblings to Rock Island.  Hazel successfully attended and graduated from the Rock Island High School on June 14, 1946.

Hazel being the oldest of nine, honored her mother and father by caring for and helping to raise her younger siblings.  This was a job she did not always like but understood the role and the importance of family.

Hazel met and married Gail R. Moore on July 19, 1947.  To this union they raised four children, Gary Moore, Carl E. Moore, Carey Darnell Moore and one daughter, Gina L. (Moore) Davis.  Death separated them after 34 years of marriage in September of 1981.

For many years, Hazel was a stay-at-home mom.  Having helped raise her siblings, she knew not only what it took to raise children but what it took to run a household and "run it" she did!

Once her children were of school age, Hazel joined the working world and was hired by the Rock Island Arsenal in 1965.  Hazel worked 40 years receiving many awards and accolades.  In 2005, Hazel turned 80 and "reluctantly" retired.  In those 40 years, she showed us what hard work and dedication looked like.  Hazel had never driven a car but that did not stop her.  Hazel could be seen every morning 6:00 am sharp at the bus stop catching not 1 but 2 buses to get to work.

Hazel's health began to fail in 2013 and her new resident became the Kahl Home Nursing Center in Davenport, Iowa.  Having always been a strong independent woman, this transition was not one she was always happy with; however, she managed to make the best of it by her  love and faith in God.

Hazel enjoyed listening to the angelic sounds of gospel music which lifted her spirits.  Hazel was known at the Kahl Home as "that lady who blasted her church music."

To everything there is a season. On October 1, 2022, Hazel's season with loved ones on this earth came to an end.  Hazel leaves to cherish her memory, children:  Carl E. Moore, Carey Darnell Moore, Gina (Moore) Davis; grandchildren: Kim McGlone, Gail Moore, Dannette Robinson, Carey Darnell Robinson, Danielle (Levelle) Brown, Michelle (Edward) Moore-Williams, Anthony Ricks; great-grandchildren: Malik Moore, Idris Thomas, Isaiah Moore, Carey Robinson, DeSean, Dalen and Devin Brown, Jenaya, Tyson and Kendrick Williams; two sisters, Alice Jean Barber and Jeanetta Douglas; two brothers, Gabriel Barber III and Albert Barber and a host of extended family, church members and friends.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, Gabriel and Mary Leora Barber; husband, Gail Moore; son, Gary Lee Moore; brother, Edward "Wallace" Barber; sisters, Dorothy Holman, Helen Manley, Beatrice Marshall and grand-daughter, Tiwala Moore.
