Hazel Schwartz, of Rock Island, passed at St. Anthony's Care Center, Rock Island, and went home to meet the Lord on Monday November 28, 2016. Graveside services will be 11:00 am Saturday at the Chapel of Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island. No visitation is planned. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island, is assisting the family. Hazel was born in Fairfield, IA, a daughter of Fred and Maude Erickson Gustafson. She graduated from Ottumwa High School in Ottumwa, IA. She moved to Moline and Rock Island, IL and married Odess Schwartz. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Rock Island. She was also a member of the Viking Club, Moline. Hazel taught herself to play the piano and organ. She was an accomplished seamstress. She enjoyed boating on the Mississippi, and learned to water ski at the age of 55. She enjoyed traveling around the U.S. with her husband in their motor home. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. Surviving are daughter, Janice Garver, Edison, NJ; grandchildren, Gregory Garver, Denver, CO and Gina Sylvain, Newton, NJ; and five great-grandchildren. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Odess; one daughter, Joan Streicher; sisters, Margie Gustafson and Dorothy Winslow; her brothers, Harold Gustafson and Virgil Gustafson.
