Jack L. McCanna, 78, of Coyne Center, IL, passed away Tuesday October 14, 2014 at Rosewood Care Center, Moline, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, Milan, IL. Inurnment, with military honors, will be at National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. today (Thursday) at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan, where a Masonic service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Milan, or to the American Cancer Society.
Jack was born May 12, 1936 in East Brady, Pennsylvania, a son of Reatha McCanna. He married Wilda "Jan" Moore on May 15, 1959 in Chicora, PA.
Jack was a U.S. Navy veteran at the time of the Korean War.
He retired from the Rock Island Post Office following many years of service as maintenance engineer. Following his retirement he worked for the Milan Park District, Crop Production Service, and Blackhawk Freight. He loved truck driving.
Jack was a member and past deacon of First Presbyterian Church, Milan; Eureka Lodge 69, A.F. & A.M., Milan; Coyne Center Fire Department, and the V.F.W.
He loved going to yard sales, the casino, church activities, tending to his yard, garden, and hunting.
Surviving are his wife, Jan, of Coyne Center; children (and spouses), Lori (David) Shields, and Dan (Angie) McCanna; grandchildren, Michael Shields, Kristina Galvan, Kaleb Shields, Megan Shields, Brandan McCanna, Ashley Adolphson, Whitney Martin and Dane McCanna; great-grandchildren, Hunter, Jayden, Bryle, Jezelle, Kaedence, Peyton, Tristyn, Morgan, Emma, Rori, Weston, Claire, Keatyn, Relynd, Paisley and Easton; sisters, Lois Simpson and Rose Harmon; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, "Baxter".
Jack was preceded in death by his mother, Reatha; brothers, Dick and Ron McCanna, and sisters, Jerry Elliott and Evelyn "Toot" Guthrie.
