Rev. James C. Crangle, 96, died Sunday, Jan, 17, 2016 at Silver Cross Nursing Center in Rock Island.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 19 at 15th Avenue Christian Church, Rock Island, with visitation one hour before. A private burial will take place later at Warren County Memorial Park, Monmouth, IL. Wheelan Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island, is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Anne Crangle Scholarship Fund at Dubuque Theological Seminary or 15th Avenue Christian Church.
James Charles Crangle was born October 23, 1919 in Chicago, the son of James and Elizabeth McMurray Crangle. He married Anne B. Zeigler on April 13, 1957 in Chicago. She died Jan. 22, 1984. He married Barbara (Wangelin) Nelson on May 20, 1989 in Rock Island.
Rev. Crangle received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Dubuque and graduated from the Dubuque Theological Seminary. He served as pastor of the Presbyterian Community Church in Rock Falls, IL, Westminster Presbyterian Church in Kirkwood, IL and the Coldbrook Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Cameron, IL. He also served a number of churches as their interim pastor. While in the Sterling/Rock Falls area he founded Self Help Enterprises, a sheltered workshop for those with developmental disabilities. Most recently he was affiliated with 15th Avenue Christian Church. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of WWll and served in the Korean conflict as a Chaplain's Assistant. Rev. Crangle was a former member of the Kiwanis Club of Rock Island and the Rotary Club in Monmouth
Survivors include his wife Barbara; daughter Barbara A. Dean, Monmouth; stepson Doug (Marcia) Nelson, Rock Island; stepdaughter Kathi (Jeff) Barnes, Rock Island; step-grandchildren Andy (Kelly) Nelson, Matt Nelson, Dan Barnes, Eric (Keila) Barnes, Karen Barnes; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife Anne, three sisters and a brother.
