IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James "Jim"
D Horstmann
October 2, 1933 – January 26, 2025
Jim Horstmann, 91, died at Siver Cross/Friendship Manor on January 26, 2025. He was born in Davenport, Iowa, on October 2, 1933, to Leonard and Agnes Horstmann of Calamus, Iowa. Jim was educated in the Calamus Community School System and graduated from Augustana College in 1955 with a BA in accounting.
Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on February 1, 2025, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Moline. A time of refreshment & fellowship with the family at church will immediately follow the service.
Jim was married on September 8, 1956, to Carol Griffiths of Western Springs, IL. This was during his service in the U.S. Navy, and they lived in Virginia and New York prior to his return to Arthur Andersen and Co. in Chicago. He and his family moved to Madison, WI in 1961, where he was CFO/VP for Harry S. Manchester (retail stores). In 1965, they relocated to Sheboygan, WI, where his role was Vice President for the H.C. Prange Co. (retail stores).
In 1983, Jim and Carol returned to the Quad Cities where they first met on the Augustana campus 30 years earlier. He served as the Development V.P. at Augustana College for 15 years, but this was somewhat disturbed by a serious attack of Gillain Barre Syndrome. After a partial recovery from his illness, Jim was determined to direct his time and energy to local programs. He served as a volunteer board member and committee member for numerous Charitable/Not for Profit organizations in the Quad City community. He was the recipient of the Community Service Award from Modern Woodman of America in 2007, and the 1992 Fund Raising Executive by NSFRE; and he received the Augustana College Alumni Service Award in 1979. Jim and Carol received the Distinguishing Service to Philanthropy Award from the Association for Fundraising Professionals in 2019.
Jim's role was often involved in fund raising efforts, but only after he and Carol had made their personal gift commitment. It is a privilege to share our time and resources and encourage others to make the Quad Cities a stronger community.
Jim loved sports, especially tennis and baseball, and enjoyed music as both a soloist and choir member. He was a member of Kiwanis Clubs for over 50 years.
His volunteer interests include education, religion, health care, health and human service, the arts, the library and parks/recreation.
Carol and Jim were happily married for over 68 years, and are proud parents of Kent (Yvette) Horstmann, Houston, TX; Karen (Kevin) Nelson, Edina, MN; and Diane Norris, Iowa City, IA; six grandchildren, Erik (Laura) Nelson, Kristen (Chip) Brophy, Peter Nelson, Trevor Horstmann, Alison Norris and Gareth Norris; and one great-grandson, Quinn Brophy and one great granddaughter, Caroline Brophy. He is survived by many nieces and nephews, friends, and former coworkers. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Robert (Helen) Horstmann.
Memorial gifts may be directed to the James D. & Carol H Horstmann Endowed Scholarship at Augustana College, the James D. and Carol H Horstmann Endowed Scholarship at Trinity College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Trinity Lutheran Church Endowment Fund, Moline. The family is grateful for the care Jim received from UnityPoint Hospice.
Condolences may be shared with the family online at www.wheelanpressly.com.
