James J. "Duke" Mapes, 85, of Rock Island passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at his home.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m.  on  Monday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island.  Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at Wheelan Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Ave.,  Rock Island.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.  Memorials may be made in care of the American Cancer Society.

James was born on October 17, 1930 in Geneseo, the son of Henry and Florence Goethals Mapes.  He attended  St. Joseph High School in Rock Island and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy.  He married Marjorie Redpath on October 3, 1953 in Matherville.  She passed away on August 23, 1993.  Duke worked for the Iowa Illinois Power Company for 40 years, retiring in 1992 as a District Supervisor.

James was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Rock Island.  He greatly enjoyed spending time with his family, going to the casino, golfing and fishing.  Duke was a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Michele (Douglas) Breiby, Lisa (Jerry) Polito, Monica Mapes and Rebecca Breiby, all of Rock Island and Kelly DeBo, Moline; 17 grandchildren ; 16 great grandchildren with 2 "on the way" and many other loving family members.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; daughter, Angela Steele; infant son, Jimmy Joe and sisters, Geraldine Frew and Henrietta Freeman
