James L. Smith, 69, of Rock Island, passed away Sunday July 23, 2017 at his home.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 27th, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan, IL. Burial will be at Preemption Cemetery, Preemption, IL. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  Wednesday, July 26th, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family to be designated later.

James was born March 19, 1948 in Moline, IL, a son of Arthur G. and Dorothy I. Mosher Smith.

He was a member of Laborer's Local Union 309, Rock Island for 23 years. He retired in June 2006.

James enjoyed salvage and scrapping, westerns, country music, raising fish in his aquarium, and the Dallas Cowboys.  Most of all he loved time spent with family and friends.

Surviving are two daughters, Kristine Smith and Angie "Jasmine" Smith, and their children; brothers and sisters (and spouses), Joyce VanRykie, East Moline, IL, John (Mary) Smith, Sabula, IA, Jack (Mary) Smith, Colona, IL, and Susan Smith, East Moline, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

James was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Rose Smith, Alberta Schmidt and Mary Prine; and three brothers, Arthur Smith, Dan Smith, and Fred Smith.
