Obituary

James Miller, 86, of Rock Island, passed away Monday, October 28, 2024, at UnityPoint Health-Trinity, Rock Island.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 9, 2024, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Avenue, Rock Island. Inurnment with military honors will be in Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Memorials may be made to the family.

James was born February 28, 1938, in Gulfport, Mississippi, to Johnnie B. and Susan (Bebley) Miller. He graduated high school in Gulfport and married Alice Sullivan in 1961. James enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1966. James worked at Farmall Works, J.I. Case, and John Deere Harvester before retiring in 1982. James then worked for Johannes Bus Service for 20 years before retiring again. He was an avid fan of all the Chicago teams, including the Bears, Cubs, Bulls, and White Sox. James was also a history buff and enjoyed gardening and photography. He was known for his BBQ ribs and numerous sayings, including "Gee Whiz" and "Great day in the morning." In his earlier years, he enjoyed dancing and singing.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Alice; children, Warren (Gail) Miller, Gloria Sonnier, and Calvin Miller; 5 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

James was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Betty Campbell.
