Obituary

James D. Waterman, age 60, of Milan, Illinois, passed away on January 26, 2026, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Born on March 4, 1965, in Moline, IL, James was the treasured child of Frederick “Fred” J. and Belva (Blankenship) Waterman. James was a devoted son, father, grandfather, and brother who will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. A dedicated member of Laborers Local Union 309 and the Rock Island Moose Lodge 190, James contributed to his community in meaningful ways and formed connections that enriched his life.

Those who knew James understood his magnetic spirit—his zest for life reflected in his passions for traveling, fishing, golfing, and riding his Harley. Above all, James treasured the time spent with his family, creating lasting memories and cherishing moments with those he loved.

He is survived by his beloved mother, Belva; his cherished children, Katie, Audrey Waterman, and Spencer (Shelby) Waterman. James took great joy in the company of his grandchildren, Myles, Elizabeth, Ransom, Lincoln, and Stella, whose laughter and love filled his heart with great pride. He is also survived by his siblings: Bel (George), Valerie, Richard (Jeanette), Polly (Peggy), Milton (Melinda), Quinton (Tracy), Melissa, and Thomas (Tracy). He was preceded in death by his father, Fred; his siblings, Phyllis and Frederick; and his adored dog, Peanut.

Cremation rites have been accorded, and while no formal services will be held at this time, a celebration of James’s life will be announced at a later date. This will be an opportunity for friends and family to gather and share stories, reflecting on the love and laughter he brought to their lives. Memorial contributions may be made in care of the family to support his legacy of kindness and connection.
