Janet L. King, 64, of Sherrard, passed away on Thursday, January 7, 2016 at UnityPoint Health-Trinity, Rock Island following a brief battle with lung cancer. Funeral services will be 10:00 am Tuesday at Preemption United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Milan. Burial will be in Preemption Cemetery. Memorials may be made in care of the American Cancer Society or to the family.

Janet was born on March 26, 1951 in Rock Island, a daughter of Henry and Ruth (Horn) Verbeke. She attended Winola and Sherrard Schools; graduating from Sherrard High School in 1969. Janet married Terry King on December 28, 1969 at Preemption United Methodist Church. Together they raised three children: Timothy King, deceased, Colleen King of Cedar Rapids and Kristin Soyke of Oswego. Janet worked at: Jaydon Corporation, Royal Neighbors Insurance Co., Coyne Center Elementary School and the Rock Island Arsenal from which she retired after 24 years of service in 2004.

Janet's life was one fully lived. Over the years she participated in many sports and activities, often excelling. She was an avid runner and competed in many Bix 7s and other road races. She took up golf and greatly enjoyed playing often with friends from the Arsenal League. Her golfing highlight came from scorekeeping for Tiger Woods in his first appearance at the Quad City Golf Classic.

Eventually, her passion turned to working with wood, constructing items of furniture and then to carving numerous wood figures. She also continued to refine her hobby of wildlife and naturescape photography.

Janet loved her friends and family, particularly her beloved grandchildren and her 13 1/2 years old miniature Schnauzer, Cookie. She loved the Northwoods and kayaking or piloting her pontoon boat on East Paint Lake, Michigan. She was particularly fond of Lake Superior, loons and American Bald Eagles. She loved to feed and photograph hummingbirds, cardinals, finches, chickadees and blue-jays.

Janet is survived by her husband of 46 years, Terry; two daughters, Colleen King of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Kristin (Steve) Soyke of Oswego, IL ; four grandchildren, Alyssa King of Sherrard and Ryan, Elayna and Kamryn Soyke of Oswego; her mother, Ruth Verbeke of Milan; siblings, Charles (Veranita) Verbeke of Aledo, Charlotte Eaton of Milan, Alice Parker of Viola, Mary (Bob) DeShane of Milan, William Verbeke of Arizona, Daniel (Glenda) Verbeke of Milan and Mike (Chris) Verbeke of Reynolds.

She was preceded in death by her father, son, Timothy and a grandson, Jackson Soyke
