Janice was born on January 19, 1931, in Rock Island, the beloved daughter of William and Lucille (Ijams) Winkler. On September 17, 1955, she married Donald Berry in Rock Island, Illinois, and together they shared many cherished years. He preceded her in death on February 3, 1982.
Janice’s Catholic faith was an important part of her life. As a lifelong member of St. Pius X Church, Rock Island, she embraced her faith with devotion and found great comfort in her relationship with God and her church. Her faith sustained her through life’s many joys and sorrows and carried her through difficult times with strength and grace. She also proudly served on the City of Rock Island Labor Day Parade Advisory Board for more than 20 years. Janice enjoyed being part of the annual parade and the opportunity it gave her to bring people together and celebrate the spirit of the community. In recognition of her years of service to the Labor Day Parade, she was honored with the City of Rock Island Key to the City.
Janice was fortunate to have many dear friends whose love and support were a great blessing in her life. She treasured the lunches, dinners, and wonderful times they shared together, and those special bonds endured as a source of laughter and precious moments. Over the years, Janice said goodbye to many beloved friends, yet she never stopped holding their memories fondly. Janice adored her friends from the Dolphin Swim Club, whose presence brought her much happiness both in and out of the swimming pool. At Friendship Manor, Janice was blessed with
friendships and caring staff whose warmth and kindness meant so much to her.
Most important to Janice was the time she shared with her family, who were the center of her life and brought her great joy and comfort. Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, in-laws, and many nephews and nieces were all very dear to her, and she found happiness in being surrounded by those she loved. Family gatherings were especially important to Janice, bringing everyone together and creating cherished moments she held close to her heart. The holiday season was one of Janice’s greatest pleasures as she prepared meals, decorated with love and delighted family with special surprises which made Christmas gatherings truly unforgettable. Her great-grandchildren especially enjoyed visits to see Grandma Big and Grandma Cookie and spending fun times with her no matter what the occasion. Janice will be remembered for her unwavering love, kind heart, sense of humor and warmth she so generously gave to her family and friends.
Survivors include her children, William Berry, Rock Island, Patricia (Donald) DeLeu, Coal Valley and James Berry, Coal Valley; daughter-in-law, Sue Berry, Rock Island; 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her sons, David Berry and Michael Berry, daughter-in-law, Lisa Berry and brother Tom Winkler.
The family is grateful for the staff at Friendship Manor and Heartland Hospice for the loving care they provided to Janice.
