IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jimmy "Jim"
Lee Michel
May 4, 1937 – January 7, 2026
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Jimmy "Jim" L. Michel, age 88, of Moline, who departed this life on January 7, 2026, surrounded by loved ones in the comfort of his home. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Jim leaves behind a legacy of kindness, service, and unwavering love. Jim was born on May 4, 1937, in Port Arthur, Texas, to Edward and Donnis Owens Michel. He joyfully married Cheryl Blake on October 20, 1972, at the 15th Avenue Christian Church in Rock Island. As a proud U.S. Navy veteran, Jim exemplified the spirit of service, later sharing his dedication with the community as a life member of the Aledo V.F.W. Post 1571. He served as the Illinois State Commander of the V.F.W. from 2000-2001. Jim dedicated 24 years to the Rock Island Police Department, being named police officer of the year in 1982. He retired in 1989 with numerous stories and cherished memories of service. Following retirement, Jim worked as the chief investigator for the Rock Island County States Attorney's Office for ten years. Jim found joy in simple pleasures, whether tending to his beloved garden, playing cards with family and friends, or cheering for his favorite Chicago Bears "as long as they were winning." He leaves behind a tapestry of love woven through family and friendships that will forever celebrate his spirit, as well as his beloved dogs who brough him so much comfort. The celebration of Jim's remarkable life will occur with a funeral service on Monday, January 12, 2026, at 10:30 AM at the Knox Chapel of Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, located at 2106 7th Avenue, Rock Island, Illinois. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, January 11, 2026, from 1-3 PM at the same location. Following the service, Jim will be laid to rest with military honors at Rock Island National Cemetery on Arsenal Island. Funeral and committal services may be viewed via live-stream by visiting: https://vimeo.com/1152614135/e8c72ea2b0.
Jim is survived by his cherished wife, Cheryl Michel, of Moline; his daughters, Jennifer (Scott) Randolph of Rock Island and Donnis (Tim) Markin of Tybee Island, Georgia; grandchildren, Ashlyn Lee, Caitlyn (Corey) Lettieri, Allisyn Lee, Spencer Markin, Cameron Markin, and Logan Randolph; and great-grandchildren, Peighton and Olivia. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Sara, Maggie, Candy, and Roger from Hospice Compassus for their compassionate care and friendship during this time. Memorial contributions may be made to the Aledo V.F.W. Post 1571 or QC Paws, supporting the causes Jim was passionate about. As we remember Jim, we invite all whose lives he touched to share their condolences, memories, and expressions of sympathy online at wheelanpressly.com.
