Joan L. Danielson, 85, of Rock Island, died Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at UnityPoint Health - Trinity Rock Island.
Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. James Lutheran Church, Rock Island. Private burial is at Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation is 9 am until service time Saturday at the church. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. James Lutheran Church or to Youth Hope.
Joan Bappe was born Sept. 26, 1929 in Mallard, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Mildred Peterson Bappe. She married Robert E. Danielson on May 15, 1954 in Ames, Iowa. He died June 27, 1985.
Joan graduated from the Michael Reese Hospital School of Nursing in 1952 and worked several years in high risk nursery with premature babies. After moving to Rock Island, she worked in the nursery at Lutheran Hospital, Moline and in later years in the dining room of Royal Neighbors of America, Rock Island.
She was an active charter member of St. James Lutheran Church, was a member of the Women of the E.L.C.A. and volunteered many years for Christian Friendliness. Joan was also a member of Home Extension and the Silver Cross Circle of King's Daughters. Hers was a life of service, she loved being a nurse and enjoyed baking which she shared with family and friends.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and David Oelmann, Coal Valley, Laurie and Mike Ziegler, Rock Island, and Wendy and David Lindell, Ottumwa, Iowa; son, Robert C. Danielson, Rock Island; grandchildren, Sarah Wadsworth (Nick Ruckman), Ashley Wadsworth (Adam Christensen), Curt (Emily) Oelmann, Pete Oelmann (Jessica Brown), Brittney (John) Schmelzer, Joshua (Chelsey) Ziegler, Jared Ziegler, and North Lindell; great grandchildren, Peyton, and Canon Ziegler and Piper, Ethan and Ben Schmelzer; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dale and Nina Bappe, Marion, Iowa, and Don and Bonita Bappe, Ames; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Joan was preceded by a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Norma Bappe.
