October 15, 1932 – February 27, 2018
Joan Lucille Stromer Groene, 85, formerly of Milan and Senior Star Elmore, Davenport, passed away quietly at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline on Tuesday evening February 27, 2018.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Milan on Saturday at 11:00am. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00-7:00pm at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 115 W. 12th Avenue, Milan or The Alzheimer's Association.
Joan was born on October 15, 1932 in Moline, the daughter of Howard E. and Margaret L. (McCann) Stromer. She grew up in Rock Island and graduated from Rock Island High School in 1950. Joan was a homemaker, worked at Boetje's Kitchen Salad, Milan and cleaned houses. She married Carl E. Groene on April 12, 1953 in Rock Island. He preceded her in death on October 19, 2007.
Joan was a Charter Member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Milan. She was very active in her church belonging to LWML, and was Kitchen Chairman overseeing numerous weddings, funerals and Soup Suppers. She also belonged to the Quilting Society at the church making numerous ugly quilts that were sent overseas and given to the Red Cross locally for people in need.
Joan enjoyed fishing and camping with Carl in Minnesota and around the US. They traveled in their RV together to many different states. She loved to cook and be with her family and friends. Her house was always the go to house for family and friends.
Survivors include her sons, David and Judy Ruth Francescon Groene, Matthew Groene and daughter, Laurie and Wayne Prather, all of Milan; grandchildren, Brett Groene, Bridget and John Stec, Spencer and Brandy Prather, Bryce Prather, both of Moline, Rebecca Landrith, Milan; 8 great grandchildren, Harrison, Lilah, Lily Rae, Carl, Octavia, Nina, Lilly Lu and Brandon; sister in law, Martha England, Rock Island; brother in law, Donald Groene, FL.; and numerous nieces and nephews who she adored.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; son, Daniel Groene; her parents; sisters, Sharon Seehase and Janet Young; brother, Raymond Stromer.
