Joan Staes Mason, a cherished member of the community, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2025, at the age of 92, at Silver Cross Pavilion at Friendship Manor in Rock Island. Born on July 31, 1932, in Rock Island, Illinois, she was the beloved daughter of Robert and Jennie Van Sevren Wangelin. Joan's life was marked by love and dedication. She was first united in marriage to Albert Staes, with whom she welcomed a son, Michael, who sadly preceded her in death. Later in life, she married Richard Mason, who also predeceased her. Joan devoted 40 years of her career to The Rock Island Bank, where she served as a teller supervisor. She was an active attendee of First Lutheran Church in Moline and participated in the Women of the Moose, reflecting her commitment to community and fellowship. An avid flower gardener, Joan also found joy in bowling and traveling, pursuits that enriched her life and fostered many treasured memories. She is survived by her sister, Diane Wangelin, who will cherish her memory. In accordance with her wishes, cremation rites will be accorded, and inurnment will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery in Rock Island. No formal service will be held.
