Joanna Rose Brooks, 89 of Moline (formerly of Rock Island) went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, October 14, 2015. She passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 16, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home in Rock Island. The family will have a celebration of life service at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 17, at South Park Presbyterian Church, Rock Island, followed by interment at Greenview Memorial Gardens in East Moline. A luncheon will follow the interment at South Park Church at 12:45 p.m.
Joanna was born December 23, 1925 to Joe and Annie Hynd Dopler. She married her husband of 66 years, Frank Brooks, on September 2, 1949. After attending United Township High School, she went on to graduate from Marycrest College and St. Anthony's Hospital School of Nursing. She also completed graduate work at the University of Marquette in Wisconsin.
During her career as a nurse educator, she taught Medical and Surgical Nursing locally at both St. Anthony's and Franciscan Hospital (now Unity Point). She also taught in Macomb, IL and Aurora, IL. In 1985, Joanna retired from Franciscan Hospital as Director of the School of Nursing.
Joanna lived a full, happy, and active life focused on her family and service to others. As a longtime member of South Park Presbyterian Church in Rock Island, she contributed her time to the Deacons as well as the Personnel Committee. An avid tennis player, Joanna was a member at the former Mill Creek Country Club and the Rock Valley Tennis Club. In addition to tennis, she enjoyed golfing, biking, playing bridge, and cheering on the Chicago Cubs as well as her grandchildren's sporting events.
She will be missed by her loving family; Frank, five children and their spouses, Mark (Marta) Brooks, Bettendorf, Terry (Dan) Goldstein, Moline, Susie (John) Bicek, Naperville, IL, Mary (Rick) Lyons, Holland, MI, and Scott (Heidi) Brooks, Jacksonville, NC; 11 grandchildren and their spouses, Lindsay (Adam) Smith, Leslie (Jason) Pock, Kate Goldstein (Brad Jahnel), Andrew Brooks, David Brooks, J.C. Bicek, Frank Bicek, Mark Bicek, Sean Brooks, Brandon Brooks, and Ryan Brooks; and four great-grandchildren, Liam, Corbin, and Paxton Smith, and Coen Pock.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Joseph and Johnnie Dopler.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Joanna's name to Unity Point Hospice or South Park Church. The family would also like to thank Unity Point Hospice for their care and support.
