Joel B. Young, 93, of Rock Island, died Thursday, June 29, 2017 at UnityPoint Health - Trinity, Rock Island.  A funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Rock Island.  A rosary will be recited at 2:30 p.m. Sunday with visitation to follow from 3-5 p.m. at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island.  Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors will be conducted.  Memorials may be made in care of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to the River Bend Food Bank.

Joel was born in Rock Island on September 21, 1923, a son of  Frank and Dorothy Amelia Benetiere Young.  He married Dorothy Anna Krayenhagen in Clinton, Iowa on July 25, 1953.

Joel enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943.  He served on the USS Laning during WWII.  He worked as a tool and die maker for John Deere Harvester Works, East Moline, and retired in 1985 after 27 years.

Joel was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Rock Island.  He was a devote catholic, who had a great love for his family, especially  his grandchildren.  He was extremely fond of his Krayenhagen nieces and nephews - Marcia, Mary Ann, Gary, Kenneth, John, Elizabeth and Christine, considering them to be like his own children.  He guided his life with the principles of honesty, kindness and integrity.  He was a constant learner, always interested in exploring something new.  He had many hobbies and special interests.  He was very generous with his time and resources, helping others throughout his long life.  He spent the last 64 years of his life with the love of his life, his wife, Dorothy.  He will be greatly missed.

Joel is survived by his wife, Dorothy Young, Rock Island; children, Carolyn (Michael Maloney) Young, Rock Island and David (Tammy) Young, Athens, Ala.; grandchildren, Kristina Young, Jennifer (Jason) Higgins, Andrew Maloney, Katie Maloney and Grace Maloney; one great-grandson, Dylan Higgins; and sister, Emily Rose Decock, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Frank Young Jr., sister-in-law, Jean Young, brother-in-law, Albert Decock and all of his wife's siblings and spouses.
