He was born on May 25, 1962, in East St. Louis, Illinois, to Laverne Harold and John Shanklin.
John graduated from high school in 1980 and proudly joined the United States Navy in February 1981. He served honorably for six years, stationed aboard the USS MacDonough (DDG-39) at Port Everglades, Florida. During his service, he was awarded the Navy Expeditionary Medal, a testament to his dedication and courage.
After his discharge in 1987, John eventually moved to the Quad Cities in 1999 to be closer to his brother, Marvin. He made his home in Rock Island, IL where he remained until his passing.

John will be remembered for his quiet strength, his service to his country, and the selfless love he shared with his family and friends.
