Captain John F. Haas, 95, died on January 3, 2017. A Memorial Mass for Captain John will be 10 am, Wednesday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Milan. There will be no visitation. Inurnment with military honors will be held at the Rock Island National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Aledo VFW.
A veteran of World War II, John served in the Army Air Forces from spring of 1942 until January of 1945. After full honorable discharge from the Army Air Forces, John enlisted in the 2665th Air Force Reserves for the next 18 years. During combat, Captain John flew the consolidated B-24 Liberator and was awarded several medals including the Air Medal and 3 Battle Awards in recognition of courageous service.
Captain John F. Haas was born on July 11, 1921 in Henry, Illinois to John A. Haas and Dorothy A.(Schubert)Haas. He was the oldest of four siblings. Capt. John Haas graduated from Chillicothe Township High School in 1939. He worked and retired from the Rock Island Railroad after 31 years of service. He married Ardith M. Bleuer on October 18, 1957 and they had two children. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and shooting pool and during his retirement and spending winters in Florida. John was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and was finally able to see them win a World Series prior to his death.
Captain John F. Haas is survived by his brothers, Robert V. Haas, Tinley Park, IL and Henry R. Haas, Marianna, Florida; His son, Jim (Unchalee) Haas of Rock Island, IL and daughter, Patti (Joe) Schluter of Viola, IL; His granddaughter, Laura (Trey) Tyner; grandsons, Joe Hajny and Jacob (Erica) Hajny; great grandchildren, Autumn Hajny, Abigail Hajny, Landon Tyner, Logan Tyner and Jonah Hajny. A special recognition to, long time friend, Paul Sparr from Hanover, Pennsylvania.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Helen Johnson of California. A special thank you to the patience and loving staff of The Fort Armstong in Rock Island, Illinois
