Obituary

John F. Meenan, 92, of Rock Island, died on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2014 at the United Hospital in St. Paul, Minn.

A Christian wake service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 1st at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island, followed by visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 2nd at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial is at the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors will be presented by Moline American Legion Post 246. Memorials may be made to Alleman High School, the Handicapped Development Center, Davenport, or to St. Pius X Catholic Church.

John was born Jan. 8, 1922 in Rock Island, a son of Patrick Francis and Anna G. Gillon Meenan. John graduated from the former St. Joseph High School in Rock Island. He received his BS in Math from St. Ambrose College and his BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Iowa, College of Engineering.

John served our country during World War II as a Lieutenant (jg) in the US Navy aboard the USS Montrose (APA-212) and the USS Holt (DE 706) in the South Pacific Theatre.

John married the love of his life, the former Jacqueline M. Smith of Rock Island on Nov. 13, 1954 in Rock Island.

John was employed for forty years with the former Iowa-Illinois Gas & Electric Company. He was superintendant of Distribution and Electric Transmissions, along with serving as Vice-President and Secretary of the Julie Corporation, the one call system of Illinois. John retired from Iowa-Illinois in January of 1987.

John was a long-time member of the Rock Island Rotary Club. He was also a member of the Father Edward J. Bader Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Allouez Council 658 Knights of Columbus, the former Rock Island Arsenal Golf Club, American Society of Civil Engineers and an electric industry representative to the Electric Power Research Institute for study of "Galloping Conductors". He served twenty years on the Rock Island Electrical Commission.

Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline; sons and daughters-in-law, John Gregory and Dee Pike Meenan, Rochester Hills, Mich., Paul and Sue Meenan, Ames, Iowa, Steven and Elizabeth Meenan, Woodbury, Minn.; sons, William Meenan, Lakewood, Colo. and Timothy Meenan, Chandler, Ariz.; daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Robert Eck, Denver, Colo.; his four granddaughters, Kelly, Eleanor, Evelyn and Cora; three grandsons, Jason, Colin and Mitchell; and his sister-in-law, Katherine Meenan, Bettendorf. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Meenan; sisters, Rosemary and Jane Meenan; and daughter-in-law, Vaike Meenan.
