IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John Steve
Prester
October 30, 1913 – July 26, 2015
John Steve Prester, 101, of Rock Island, went to be with our Lord, his wife and two sons on Sunday, July 26, 2015 at Silver Cross Health and Rehab, Rock Island.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 -7 Ave., Rock Island. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 7 pm on Friday. Burial will be at Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Salvation Army.
John was born October 30, 1913 in Konsboro, MD. The son of John and Kate Zsedly Prester. The family moved to Rock Island when John was 13 years old. He graduated from Rock Island High School in 1933.
He married Phyllis L. Chambers on August 14, 1939 in Maquoketa, Iowa. She preceded him in death on April 12, 2005. They had two sons, John N. and Jim. Mr. Prester was a member of First Lutheran Church in Rock Island.
In his early years John was a golden gloves boxer. He always said he had sense enough to quit while he was still undefeated. He loved to play cards, shoot picks and sing.
John owned and operated Old Reliable Roofing (no connection to the present company with that name) for 40 years. He retired in 1979 turning the company over to his son.
As a husband, father, grandfather, uncle and father-in-law he was the best. He loved his family and there was nothing he would not do for them. He will be remembered as the dearest, sweetest, kindest and most loving man his family will ever know.
He is survived by his beloved grandchildren, John M. Prester and Holly D. Castens, both of Rock Island; his devoted daughter-in-law, Mary Prester-Stout, Illinois City; a special niece, Dixie Pancrazio, Moline; and several other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; two sons; and sisters, Margaret and Kate.
