John A. Slagel, 70, of Rock Island, passed away Thursday, August 17, 2017 at his daughter's residence.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Colona.  Visitation will be held from 4 pm to 7 pm on Monday, August 21, 2017 at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island.  Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island.  Memorials may be made to the family.

John was born on November 7, 1946 in Owensboro, KY, the son of Allen Nelson and Margaret Mae Walker.  He married Mary Brocksieck on February 6, 1970 in Illinois.  John worked as a roofer at the Local #32.  He was an avid Chicago Bears and St. Louis Cardinals fan.  John loved fishing, watching western movies (especially John Wayne), hunting, and spending time with his grandchildren.

John is survived by his wife, Mary Slagel, Rock Island; daughter, Sherry (Adrian) Rincon, Rock Island; grandchildren, Adrian, Christopher, Alexander, and Gabriella Rincon; siblings, Larry (Brenda) Slagel, TX, Kathy O'Neil, Colona, IL, Jerry (Blanche) Slagel, Cleveland, IL, Charlotte Slagel, OK, Marlene Slagel, OK, and Darlene Slagel, TX; and sister-in-law, Brenda Slagel, TX.  He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Mike Slagel.
