Dr. Joseph R. Bishop, 87, of Moline, formerly of Rock Island, died Thursday, July 24, 2014 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.

Funeral services are 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at South Park Presbyterian Church, Rock Island. Burial is at Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island, where military honors will be presented by Moline American Legion Post 246. Visitation is 4 to 7 pm Monday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island. Dr. Bishop was born Apr. 5, 1927 in Andalusia, the son of Clarence and Hazel Elliott Bishop. He married Joyce V. Averbeck on July 7, 1956 in Fond du Lac, Wis.

He graduated from Augustana College and taught school in Illinois City and later was assistant superintendent of the Silvis Schools. Dr. Bishop later returned to school and graduated from the Loyola University School of Dentistry and was in practice in Rock Island and Moline until his retirement in 2009.

He was a WW II U.S. Navy veteran and was stationed aboard the USS Wrangell. Dr. Bishop was a member of South Park Presbyterian Church, where he had served as an Elder and Trustee. He was a member of the American Dental Association, Illinois State Dental Society, Rock Island District Dental Society, The Outing Club, Davenport and Rock Island Rotary Club.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Andrew Sutliff, Showlow, Ariz.; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. James and Dr. Catherine Bishop, Rock Island; granddaughters, Kelly and Christina Bishop, both of Rock Island; sisters and brothers-in-law, Dee and Dr. Loren Horton, LaGrange Park, Ill. and Peggy and Charles Pierce, Moline; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Dorothy Rursch.
