Joseph D. Boccarossa, 100, of LaMotte, Iowa, formerly of Rock Island, died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2016 at Mill Valley Care Center, Bellevue, Iowa. Funeral services are 1 pm Monday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island, Ill. Burial is at the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors will be presented by Moline American Legion Post 246. Visitation is Noon until service time Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice of Jackson County, Iowa. Joseph was born Oct. 6, 1915 in Pine Bluff, Ark., the son of Giuseppe Boccarossa and Palmena Ferri. He married Mary E. Ohanian on June 27, 1942 in Chicago. She died Nov. 16, 2003. He married Norine Wehage Hankemeier on June 14, 2009 in LaMotte, Iowa. Joe retired from the Rock Island Arsenal in 1971, where he had worked as an engineer. He was a WW II U.S. Army Veteran. Joe was a former member of the Black Hawk Hiking Club and enjoyed square dancing. He was happy to have been able to spend 28 winters in Hawaii, where he made many friends. Survivors include his wife, Norine Hankemeier; children, Jack (Noreen) Boccarossa, Milan, Ill., Barbara (Bob) Stave, Wolfeboro, N.H., Daryl (Susan) Hankemeier, Bellevue, Iowa and Jane (Andrew) Stroup, Tipton, Iowa; grandchildren, James (Stephanie) Boccarossa, Chicago, Carrie (Gregg) Pillay of Florida, Sara, Anna, Erin and Kyle Hankemeier, Bellevue, and John, Becca, Jacob, Joshua, Megan and Emily Stroup, Tipton; and great grandchildren, Alex and Anthony Pillay of Florida. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary; brother, Ginaro Boccarossa; and sisters, Rose Ringger, Cecila Turchi and Anna Cecchini. Online condolences may be left at wheelanpressly.com.
