Joseph R. Mendoza, 88, of Rock Island, passed away Tuesday September 5, 2017 at his home.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 - 7th Ave., Rock Island. Burial, with military honors presented by Moline American Legion Post 246, will be at National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Visitation will be 2pm to 5pm  Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to ARC of the Quad Cities.
Joseph was born March 13, 1929 in Moline, IL, a son of Demetrio and Juanita Mata Mendoza. He married Josephine G. Arguello on May 31, 1958 in Bettendorf, IA.
Joseph was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Following his military service, he was employed at John Deere Harvester Works, East Moline, for 32 years. He retired in 1978. He was a member of U.A.W. Local 865, East Moline.
He will be fondly remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather. He dedicated his life to caring for all of them, especially his son, Matthew. Joseph enjoyed vegetable gardening, cooking for family and friends, playing cards, listening to Mexican music, taking scenic drives and visiting California, Las Vegas, and the casinos.
Surviving are his wife, Josephine, of Rock Island; sons, Thomas Mendoza, Rock Island, Steven Mendoza, and his wife Patty, Dixon, IL, and Matthew Mendoza, Rock Island; grandsons, Steven Joseph Mendoza and Michael David Mendoza; brother, Angelo Mendoza, East Moline; and many nieces, nephews and other family.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Josephine Morales, Inez Morales, Phillip Mendoza, Frances Herrera, Lupe Martinez and Maria Luisa Mendoza.
