Josephine E. (Ellen) Johnson, 100, of Rock Island, passed away Monday April 13, 2015 at Friendship Manor, Rock Island.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30am Saturday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00-6:00pm at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island, with a rosary recited at 3:30pm. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Memorials may be made to St. Pius X Church, Hospice Compassus, or Friendship Manor.
Josephine E. (Ellen) Johnson was born in Tiskilwa, Bureau County, IL. Aug 12, 1914 the daughter of James and Mary Hannan. She married Gail W. Johnson July 19, 1933 in Bradford, IL. She lived most of her married life in Rock Island, IL.
She was a charter member of St. Pius X Church, served on the parish council, Eucharistic Minister, president of Altar and Rosary and Circle 5. She was past president of YWCA, Church Women United, on the board of Catholic Social Services for 19 years, as well as United Way and RI County Health Care, and a member of Girl Scouts for 25 years, president of King's Daughter's Circle Eva B Clarksen, SunFlower, and Friendship Manor's Circle 06.
Surviving children are Kathleen Murtey, Laguna Niguel, CA, Norma Johnson, Rock Island; Anne Marie (Darrell) Thode, Davenport, IA; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren, and 7 great great grandchildren, many dear cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by husband Gail, daughter Virginia Zeitler Alfrey, son Norman, 6 brothers, and 4 sisters.
