Julian "Jay" K. Powell, 66, of Rock Island, IL, passed away Saturday February 28, 2015 at St. Anthony's Nursing and Rehab., Rock Island.
No services are planned. Arrangements are entrusted to Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island.
Julian was born November 2, 1948 in Chicago, IL, a son of Emmitt and Harriette Brown Powell. Jay was raised in Evanston, IL, where he graduated from Evanston Township High School. He later attended Kentucky State in Frankfort, KY, and received his Associates Degree in the Arts from Kendall College, Evanston.
He married Stephanie Hicks. She preceded him in death.
Jay was employed for many years with the Dept. of Sanitation, and later the Parks Dept. for the city of Evanston. Following his retirement, he moved to Rock Island.
He was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church, Rock Island, where he served as Leader of the "Unshackled Group" of the Celebrate Recovery Program. He was an avid Harley Davidson fan, and enjoyed motorcycling and traveling.
Surviving are his "adopted brother" and lifelong friend, Alec Childress, Skokie, IL; and special friend, Mary Lee Anderson, Rock Island.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and wife.
