Obituary

Loyd Glenn Shackelford, 74, of Moline, died Thursday, January 28, 2021 at home unexpectedly.

Services for Glenn will be 1 pm, Monday, February 8, 2021 at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Entombment will be in the Calvary Mausoleum, Rock Island. Memorials made be made to the Quad Cities Animal Welfare Center, Milan.

Glenn was born on February 25, 1946 to the late L.E. "Monk" Shackelford and the late Mildred Rushing, living most of his youth in Lamar County, Alabama.

Glenn married Mary Tallulah Merchant in Sulligent, AL, divorcing in 1968. In October 1968, he married Joan Kehoe of Rock Island after meeting her while working at a service station where he repaired her car. She died in 2003. He married Wanda (Earel) Hipes in Moline on June 22, 2006.

After moving permanently to the Quad Cities in 1971, Glenn was employed as a radiator technician at Auto Acres before starting his career at International Harvester / Case-New Holland in 1973. He primarily worked in the paint and paint repair departments where he honed his skills in body repair and as a professional painter. These skills were used many times to help friends or as a source of income when times were hard. Glenn proudly served as a Union Steward for his UAW Local 1304 family for the majority of his career, until retirement in 2001.

In his off time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, visiting with friends and family; especially at the picnic table under the ash tree in his backyard – usually with a dog or two nearby. Glenn's early summer goal was to have the first ripe tomato from the garden and hold that title all season. He enjoyed following the activities of his children, nieces, nephews, neighbors, grandson, great grandsons, and young people he met through his work family and Maid Rite friends. Whether it was watching softball, baseball, going to fishing derbies, talking about cars, helping with a project, or just making a phone call, he made an impact on many young people. Later in life, he enjoyed getting away to Missouri where he and Wanda had property to mow, wildlife to watch and a lake for fishing or paddling.

Glenn is survived by his wife, Wanda; children, Tina (Phillip) Lucas, Sulligent, AL, Amy (Scott) Vinzant, Milan, IL, Charles Shackelford, Viola, IL; grandson, Eric (Emily) Lucas; and great grandchildren, Mason and Brody Lucas all of Sulligent, AL; siblings, Bobby (Elaine) Shackelford, Columbus, MS, Danny Paul (Kay) Shackelford, Kennedy, AL, Judy Thomspon, Sulligent, AL; many nieces & nephews and dear friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Joan; former wife, Tallulah; and sisters, Betty Humbers, Edith Bright, Linda Crosby, and Penny Brom.
